While colourless diamonds are graded for clarity using the GIA scale, black diamonds are a different story. Their opaque nature and frequent inclusions render them ineligible for this type of assessment. Similarly, the consistent tone and saturation of black diamonds eliminate the need for further color grading beyond "Fancy black." As a result, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) doesn't issue traditional grading reports for black diamonds. Instead, they provide a Coloured Diamond Identification and Origin Report. This report confirms the diamond's colour as "Fancy black" and specifies whether it's natural or treated.
