Types of Diamond Cuts

With a design philosophy that revolves around creating timeless pieces that symbolize and celebrate special milestones in people’s lives, Yair Shimansky believes: “These exclusive diamonds are for the special woman in your life who is a real 10 out 10 and, like the rough crystal from which it is cut, is scarce and in limited supply. It may cost slightly more than a traditional cut; however, it is a small price to pay for a lifetime of brilliance.”

A widely held opinion by experts and aficionados alike is that a diamond’s cut is the most important of the ‘4Cs’. Regardless of carat, colour or clarity, a poorly cut diamond will unavoidably be lacklustre. Shimansky's expert diamond cutters have utilised advanced technical skill to cut and polish the Brilliant 10, the My Girl and the Eight Hearts diamonds. Only a limited amount of rough diamonds are suitable to polish into these pieces – adding to the rarity, exclusivity and value of these stones. Every single facet of the diamond is precisely crafted and aligned and, in addition, these diamonds go through no less than 25 check points before leaving the Shimansky factory.

Brilliant 10 Diamond

Born from a dream to create the world’s most brilliant diamond cut, the Brilliant 10 diamond features 71 facets precisely aligned – in perfect proportion and symmetry - for the ultimate display of fire, brilliance and scintillation. This is a world first in the diamond industry.

Cascading light with fierce intensity, each facet is shaped by means of a precise and calculated technique to reveal a perfect ten heart pattern when viewed from below and a perfect ten arrow pattern when viewed from above through the Ideal Scope. This is your ultimate reassurance that the Brilliant 10 diamond has been cut for perfect symmetry and proportion; visible evidence that it is in a class of its own.

The person in pursuit of owning the perfect diamond need look no further than the Brilliant 10 diamond. While a normal round brilliant cut diamond can have up to 25% leakage, there is little to no light leakage from the Brilliant 10. Taking up to three times longer to cut, and polished only by a handful of skilled master diamond polishers, the essence of this patented cut is its ability to reflect light that enters the diamond back through the table and the crown alike. The result is a diamond that reflects light with intensity like no other. And a perfect stone to choose for an engagement ring

It also means the Brilliant 10 diamond displays up to 25% more brilliance than a normal diamond and is up to two shades whiter in color than its actual color. The Brilliant 10 diamond has been tested by the international diamond laboratory in Europe and, more recently, by a Brilliant Analysis machine at an international jewelry trade show where it achieved the highest score ever recorded. Each Brilliant 10 diamond larger than .40ct is certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL), and laser inscribed with a unique ID and the Brilliant 10 trademark.

My Girl Diamond

Three years - that’s how long it took Yair Shimansky to develop the My Girl diamond, the world’s first square-cut diamond with a diamond-shaped table. Its essence is its ability to reflect light with every move you make. Only a select number of rough diamonds are suitable to become a My Girl diamond, and up to half the rough stone is sacrificed to create this mesmerizing cut.

To achieve true beauty, a diamond must return the maximum amount of light in order to create the most intense sparkle. The My Girl cut requires a highly specialized and experienced eye, careful analysis and scientific precision from a master diamond cutter. The My Girl diamond’s unique difference is that – unlike a normal Square cut diamond with four sharp corners – the My Girl has four sides with cut corners.

Making it ideal for jewelry setting, the cut corners prevent chipping and don’t pull a darker color through the stone from the corners, allowing the body color of the My Girl to be evenly distributed through the stone. Expertly polished to deliver the perfect balance of fire, brilliance and scintillation, the Shimansky My Girl diamond captures the heart of the wearer forever.

Eight Hearts (Hearts and Arrows) Diamond

Taking three times longer to polish, and shaped by only one in a thousand diamond polishers, the Shimansky Eight Hearts diamond cut displays a perfect eight heart pattern when viewed from the bottom and a perfect eight arrow star when viewed from the top. The attention to detail and superior craftsmanship that this diamond cut demands, results in perfect proportion and symmetry which is what reflects fire, brilliance and scintillation at their best.

The gem takes three times longer to polish than other diamonds, and can only be shaped by one in a thousand cutters and is handmade with the utmost precision. This is exclusive luxury at its truest. This is a great gemstone to choose for a special occasion gift.

Round Cut Diamond

Round Brilliant cut diamonds offer timeless beauty. Polished with 57 facets (or 58 facets if the culet is polished) and to ideal proportion and symmetry, Round Brilliant cut diamonds radiate with the ultimately desired brilliance and sparkle. For over a century, diamond cutters and master craftsmen have perfected the Round cut using advanced theories of light behavior, optic dispersion and geometry. When purchasing a Round Brilliant cut diamond, look for a cut grade of excellent or very good as a measure of its brilliance.

Cushion Cut Diamond

The shape of the Cushion cut diamond is characterized by soft edges and rounded corners, resembling a cushion or pillow. This type of diamond cut has been very popular since the first diamond cuts were developed. Cushion shape diamonds range from a rounded square shape to a more rectangular shape and feature 57 facets (or 58 facets if the culet is polished) where the large facets create a greater separation of white light into spectral colors. If you prefer the squarer shape, look for a length-to-width ratio of 1.05:1 or less.

For a more rectangular shape, one could look for a length-to-width ratio of greater than 1.10:1 to achieve the best symmetry from your stone.

Emerald Cut Diamond

The Emerald cut is an elegant diamond shape with step-like facets that is rectangular in shape with trimmed corners. Due to its larger, open table, this shape is often reserved for top color and clarity diamonds and is well suited to people with larger hands, or who want their ring to look bold on their finger. The Emerald cut is typically polished with 57 facets (or 58 facets if the culet is polished) of which 32 are located on the pavilion and 25 are on the crown. Generally, the optimum length-to-width ratio for an Emerald cut diamond should be 1.30:1 - 1.50:1, although 1.40:1 is the most sought after.

Square Emerald Cut Diamond

The Square Emerald cut, also known as Asscher cut, is a unique diamond cut similar to an Emerald cut diamond. It has step-like facets with trimmed corners, but is square in shape. The Asscher cut was developed in 1902 by Joseph Asscher and was inspired by the early, and very simple, table cuts of the Renaissance. Regular square emerald cut diamonds have between 50 – 57 facets (or 58 facets if the culet is polished) and a ratio of 1.0:1 or 1.10:1. The appealing allure of this diamond cut is its “hall of mirrors” effect created by its step-cut facets.

Pear Shape Diamond

The Pear shape is a unique hybrid cut, shaped like a tear drop and combining the best of the Marquise and Round Brilliant cut. Well proportioned, it gives a depth of scintillation to the point of the diamond. Pear shapes are extremely popular in rings, earrings and pendants and are often associated with celebrity jewelry. Pear shapes are typically polished with 55  facets (or 56 facets if the culet is polished), and the optimal length-to-width ratio is between 1.50:1 and 1.60:1.

Oval Shape Diamond

An Oval diamond is an elongated version of the Round Brilliant diamond. If well proportioned, this beautiful cut gives great brilliance, fire and scintillation – what you aim for in every quality diamond. An Oval is generally polished with 56 facets (or 57 facets if the culet is polished). Oval diamonds are also very popular as their length can accentuate long, slender fingers. The Oval shape has a larger surface area than a Round Brilliant diamond of the same carat weight, and is an excellent choice for those more concerned with size. The ideal length-to-width ratio is 1.50:1 but a range from 1.40:1 to 1.55:1 is widely acceptable.

Radiant Cut Diamond

This rectangular cut features trimmed corners and combines the elegance of the Emerald shape diamond with the brilliance of the Round. Radiant cut diamonds have 62 or 69 facets (or 70 facets if the culet is polished), and are technically known as a ‘cut-cornered, rectangle (or square) modified brilliant diamonds’. Generally, if you are looking for a square cut, a Radiant shape’s length to width ratio is approximately 1.05:1. For a more rectangular shape, look for a ratio of between 1:30:1 and 1.50:1.

Princess Cut Diamond

Square in shape and with pointed corners, the princess cut diamond is one of the most popular shapes of all fancy cut diamonds. Its beautiful brilliance and square shape makes it a popular choice for engagement rings. Technically known as a ‘Square Modified Brilliant Cut’, the princess cut is a square version of the Round Brilliant cut with numerous sparkling facets. The optimal ratio of length to width is 1:1 for a perfect square. The standard number of facets on a princess cut diamond is 57 (or 58 facets if the culet is polished) but the number of facets and the faceting arrangement on can vary widely between 50 – 76 facets.

Marquise Cut Diamond

The Marquise has a slender shape characterized by two sharp points on either end. Like the Oval, the Marquise accentuates and enhances long, slender fingers and has a large surface area. The standard number of facets on a Marquise cut is 57 (or 58 facets if the culet is polished). The story goes that the Marquise shape was inspired by the fetching smile of the Marquise de Pompadour. King Louis XIV commissioned the cut, as he wanted a diamond to match her captivating smile. The optimal ratio of length-to-width is 2.0:1, although a range between 1.85:1 and 2.10:1 is also acceptable.

Heart Shape Diamond

Being the ultimate symbol of love, the heart shape diamond is for the true romantic. The modified brilliant cut takes skill and expertise to achieve the perfect balance. Its unmistakable shape adds to its popularity in pendants and solitaire rings and it is the perfect gift for your loved one on a special occasion. The heart shape diamond has 57 facets (or 58 facets if the culet is polished). The ideal length-to-width ratio for the heart shape diamond is 0.90:1 and 1.10:1.
